Should Footballers be Suspended for Playing Away from Home?

This is a hot topic of debate in the media at the moment, following scandalous revelations that Wayne Rooney cheated on his wife Colleen on numerous occasions. In this article we will discuss both sides of the story, allowing you, the reader, to come to your own conclusions.

Some people believe that footballers should be banned from playing because they are role models for the younger generations. Surveys show that 45% of boys think of footballers as their hero. Therefore, it is clear that they are setting a bad example for the younger generation. If footballers cheat on their wives and don’t get punished, the younger generation will think this type of behaviour is acceptable. The footballers are sending out the wrong message to children.

Another reason why footballers should be banned is because it gives England a bad name if we let our players get away with it. Other countries might look down on us. This clearly shows that our players are giving us a bad name because this type of problem doesn’t happen in football teams around the world.

On the other hand, there are many reasons why players shouldn’t be banned. The media should not mix peoples private and public lives. Ordinary people cheat on their spouses every day, but are not punished for it in the work place. So why should football players be banned?

Another reason why they shouldn’t be suspended is that it will affect matches. If we took a star player out of an England game and England lost as a result, England fans would be devastated. England manager, Fabio Capello, says that he will not take players out of matches just because they cheat on their wives. In a recent interview, Capello said “We are focused on the game, not about the private life of the players”. This clearly shows that punishing players is not needed if it has no effect on how they play on the pitch.

Therefore, in my opinion, I think that England players should not be suspended as it has nothing to do with their performance on the pitch or what they get paid for. What is your opinion?
