Barnet Dance Festival

The coach hummed along the Finchley high road as twenty dancers full of adrenaline were chatting and singing along loudly to the radio. We paced to the entrance with our bags dragging behind us.

Once we arrived, we went straight to the theatre room that held much promise for later that evening. We watched a variety of kids with plenty of appreciation and waited in the wings with anticipation until it was finally our turn to turn to practice. The CD started to play and a trumpet siren boomed through the theatre - it was our cue. The practise went well with very few mistakes and we were all happy with our performance.

We got kind comments from other schools while the last school practised and we walked behind the stage to the dressing rooms. BTECH dancers were in one, girls for KStage3 were in the second and boy KStage3 break dancers were in the third. Hurriedly we got changed and painted our faces with army colours to add identity to our costumes. As we were making the final touches to our outfits we were told we were allowed 45 minutes free time to go and find food on the high road.

The sounds of coins clanging and clicking were sounded through an array of rooms and an army of people trudged passed the busy shops. As all the people returned we started to wait impatiently until we were told the show was about to start, half an hour later. Shrieks of excitement erupted from most of dressing rooms as friends were asking “is my hair okay?”

KStage3 dancers were performing fourth and it felt like no time at all we were told to quieten down. We waited in the wings once more and then the room vibrated with the pounding, stomping base of ‘holloback girl’ and we started to march. The audience was clapping along and for that one moment it felt like your brain had switched off and that all you could think about was the steps. It was a really amazing experience.

We all went back to the dressing rooms and got changed into our finale costumes. We chatted about what had happened and we all were really glad that the performance had gone well. We all walked to the wings for the last time and we were joined by the other schools as well. We danced the choreographed dance to ‘Body Electric’ and all the schools were called out one by one. When our school was shouted, we jumped up and down and screamed and shrieked. It was a really memorable experience and we were all really proud to be a part of The Compton School.
